Steph Curry carried the Golden State Warriors to a series-tying Game 4 win, but it was his teammates who did the heavy lifting in Game 5 of the 2022 NBA Finals against the Boston Celtics. Andrew Wiggins, Klay Thompson, Jordan Poole and Gary Payton II combined for 76 points, helping cover for an uncharacteristic 0-for-9 shooting night from 3-point range for Curry, as the Warriors won 104-94 on Monday. Now with a 3-2 series lead, Golden State will go for the close out on the road as Game 6 of the NBA Finals 2022 approaches on Thursday evening.

Why the Warriors can cover

In Game 5 the Warriors dispelled the notion that Curry would have to carry this team all the way. Curry didn’t hit a single 3-pointer on Monday, marking the first time that’s happened since 2018. Thompson, however, picked up the slack, going 5 of 11 from 3-point range on his way to 21 points. Wiggins also struggled from 3-point territory (0 of 6), but he found other ways to score on his way to a team-high 26 points.

Now Boston must scramble to find ways to better neutralize Golden State’s secondary scorers, while also keeping tabs on Curry, who went off for 43 points in Game 4 in Boston. Golden State is 20-11 in closeout games since Curry joined the team, making the Warriors an intriguing pick as they catch a few points with the Larry O’Brien Championship Trophy on the line.

Why the Celtics can cover

Boston’s defense is unquestionably elite, and the Celtics have intriguing offensive credentials. Boston is securing 28.8 percent of missed shots on the offensive glass in the series, and the Celtics are passing the ball at a high level. Ime Udoka’s team is averaging 25.0 assists per game and assisting on 69.1 percent of field goals against Golden State. In addition, the Celtics are averaging 23.7 free throw attempts per game in the postseason and making 41.0 percent of 3-point attempts against Golden State in the NBA Finals. Jayson Tatum and Jaylen Brown are dynamic shot creators, and Boston has impressive balance on offense.

On the other side of the floor, the Celtics led the NBA in defensive rating, shooting efficiency allowed, and assists allowed during the regular season, illustrating overall defensive dominance. Boston is also giving up only 106.2 points per 100 possessions in the playoffs, and the Celtics are yielding only 16.0 free throw attempts per game to the Warriors while grabbing 74.3 percent of available defensive rebounds.
