KINGSTON, N.Y. — The city’s Fourth of July celebration will not feature pre-fireworks entertainment because officials felt it was not an appropriate time to ask businesses to sponsor it, the mayor said.

“The pre-fireworks entertainment has always been privately funded,” Mayor Steve Noble said in an email Tuesday. “With businesses struggling, we felt it wasn’t an appropriate time to ask for sponsorship and better to encourage folks who are enjoying the fireworks to spend time shopping and dining downtown beforehand.”

Fireworks are set to be launched at the city’s waterfront on Monday, the Fourth of July. They will be visible from T.R. Gallo Park. The city is working on plans to provide shuttle service to and from the waterfront.

The display, which will be fired off from a barge in the Rondout Creek just after dark, is being sponsored by Ole Savannah Restaurant and O’Connor & Partners.
