The Dallas Cowboys will hope to remain alive in the race for the NFC East title when they open Week 17 of the 2022 NFL schedule by visiting the reeling Tennessee Titans on Thursday Night Football. Dallas (11-4) defeated division-rival Philadelphia 40-34 last week to climb within two games of the first-place Eagles with two remaining. The Titans (7-8) have lost five consecutive contests and likely will be missing two key offensive players, with quarterback Ryan Tannehill out following ankle surgery and running back Derrick Henry listed as doubtful with a hip injury. This game means little to Tennessee since next week’s showdown at Jacksonville will determine the winner of the AFC South.

Kickoff is 8:15 p.m. ET. Dallas is a 14-point favorite in the latest Cowboys vs. Titans odds from Caesars Sportsbook while the over/under for total points scored is 40. Before making any Titans vs. Cowboys picks or NFL predictions, you’ll want to see what SportsLine’s resident Cowboys expert, Larry Hartstein, has to say.

A former lead writer for Covers and The Linemakers, Hartstein combines a vast network of Vegas sources with an analytical approach he honed while working for Pro Football Focus. He entered the 2022 NFL season 427-344 all-time on NFL side picks (plus $3,764 for $100 players), including 394-330 against the spread. Hartstein went 68-50 ATS and 8-3 on money-line plays last season for a profit of $1,552.

Hartstein also is 13-3 on his last 16 NFL picks involving the Cowboys, meaning he’s uniquely qualified to make this pick. Anybody who has followed him is way up.

Why the Cowboys can cover

Dallas’ offense has been in high gear of late, producing at least 27 points in its last eight contests and 40 or more four times in that span. The team is third with an average of 28.9 points and quarterback Dak Prescott has thrown three touchdown passes in three of his last four outings. Leading rusher Tony Pollard (988 yards) is reportedly out with a thigh injury, but two-time NFL rushing leader Ezekiel Elliott is 171 yards away from his fifth 1,000-yard season and has run for a TD in eight consecutive games.

On the other side of the ball, the Cowboys are first in the league with a plus-12 turnover differential and third in sacks (49). Linebacker Micah Parsons, who is questionable and dealing with a hand injury, is fifth in the NFL with 13 sacks, while defensive ends Dorance Armstrong and DeMarcus Lawrence have recorded eight and six, respectively. Rookie cornerback DaRon Bland is tied for third in the league with five interceptions, notching one in each of his last two contests. See which team to pick here.

Why the Titans can cover

Dallas is in a letdown spot on TNF following its emotional win over division rival Philadelphia on Christmas Eve. The Cowboys are also playing for the third time in 12 days, making this a difficult scheduling spot for them. They need a help if they want to earn the No. 1 seed in the NFC playoff bracket, so their top priority will be getting out of Nashville healthy heading into Week 18.

Their defense has also taken a step back of late, recording just one sack in their past three games after leading the league for most of the season. They have allowed 74 combined points in their past two games, and that kind of effort will make it difficult to cover a huge spread on the road. Tennessee has won outright and covered the spread in each of its last four games as a home underdog. See which team to pick here.
